ABSTRACT

Background: No dairy breed or crossbreed has superior overall performance in all environments; therefore, it is necessary to determine which crossbreed is the most suitable for the Mexican tropic and what proportion of European breed is optimum for reproduction. Objective: To assess the effect of the proportion of Bos taurus (Bt) genes on reproductive performance of Holstein×Zebu (HZ) and Brown Swiss×Zebu (BZ) cows, and compare reproductive performance of these genotypes in a dual- purpose production system. Methods: Cows were maintained in a rotational grazing system on African star grass (Cynodon plectostachyus) in Veracruz, Mexico. Cows were milked twice daily. Calves were kept tied to the side of their dams while the cows were milked. Results: The percentage of Bt genes did not affect (p>0.05) fertility traits (age at first calving, days to first service after calving, services per conception, conception rate at first service, days open until conception, gestation length, and calving interval) of BZ cows. In contrast, HZ cows with less than 75% Holstein (H) genes were 0.3 years younger (p<0.05) at first calving and had 39.8 fewer days open (p<0.05) than HZ cows with 75% H genes or more. In addition, the calving interval of HZ cows with less than 75% H genes was 44.8 days shorter (p<0.05) than that of HZ cows with 75% H genes or more. The HZ cows had five fewer days pregnant and were 22.8 kg heavier at calving (p<0.05) than BZ cows. Conclusions: The effect of the percentage of Bt genes on cow fertility depends on the dairy breed used. In general, BZ and HZ cows present similar reproductive performance.

ABSTRACT

Background: Tuberculosis is an increasing health problem worldwide with around 9.6 billion new cases reported every year. Female genital tuberculosis (FGTB) has a varying incidence ranging from a very low of 0.69% in developed nations to as high as 19% in developing nations like India. The average incidence of infertility due to tuberculosis is 5-10% worldwide. Methods: The study was a hospital based prospective clinical study, from September 2014-2017 with sample size of 355 infertility cases. Endometrial sampling and diagnostic hystero-laparoscopy were used for diagnosis. Endometrial sample subjected for both the test CBNAAT and HPR was used for confirmation of positive patients. Inclusion criteria were, infertile patients diagnosed with genital tuberculosis who were then given treatment. Patients diagnosed to have infertility due to causes other than TB were excluded from the study. Highly suspected cases and those who were willing underwent diagnostic laparoscopy. Results: Out of 355 cases of infertility, 83 were because of genital TB, received treatment out of which 32 conceived.  CBNAAT was very sensitive than histopathology or laparoscopy. The live birth rate and conception rate were 20.24% and 38.09 % respectively. Conclusions: CBNAAT is OPD based economical test (free by GOI), very sensitive and picked up more cases than histopathology or laparoscopy. The live birth rate and conception rate were found to be higher than other studies possible due to intervention at an earlier stage of the disease process. This test should be widely used by gynecologist for early detection of genital tuberculosis.

ABSTRACT

To analyse the effect of sexed semen on different breeds used in artificial insemination following study was conducted using sexed semen from seven different breeds for artificial insemination in females. All bulls used for sexing by ABS India were genomically tested for Holstein and Jersey breeds. A total of 3034 inseminations with Sexcel were performed with 2589 inseminations in dairy cows and 445 in buffaloes. The conception rate of sexed semen using confirmative pregnancy diagnosis (using peri rectal examination) at 90 days post insemination both in cows and buffaloes was recorded. Sex of the calf was recorded after the birth in each case. The results of conception rate (CR) and pregnancy rate evaluation in different breeds were recorded. The results revealed the average conception rate of Sexcel semen is 49.1% (ranging from 45.1 to 55.3%) in cows and 42.7 % in buffaloes. These figures show a cumulative picture wherein sexed semen was used in animals of different parities (Both primiparous and pluriparous). The current study provides ample insights into the conception rate using sexed semen under various agro climatic conditions in different breeds. The study showed that sexed semen gives good conception in animals of one to three parities provided they are reproductively clean and possess good fertility

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

The aim of this work was to submit sperm cells to different laboratory challenges and to compare in vitro results with in vivo semen fertility. Four different batches from the same Brangus bull were used in a timed-AI program of 332 Brangus cows. Each batch (B) was submitted to the following procedure: semen sample was thawed at 36°C for 30 seconds (control). Sperm motility parameters, plasma membrane integrity, sperm morphology, and concentration were assessed. Then, an aliquot of thawed sample was incubated in a water bath at 45°C for 40 min (thermal challenge group; TCG) and another aliquot was centrifuged at 500 xg (Percoll gradient 45%/90%) for 15 min (centrifugation challenge group; CCG). Centrifuged semen was also submitted to another thermal challenge, being incubated (water bath) at 45°C for 40 min (centrifugation + thermal challenge group; CTCG). At the end of each challenge (CCG, TCG, and CTCG), the same laboratory tests used for control group were repeated. The following conception rates (CR) were observed for each batch: B1 = 48.9% (44/90); B2 = 44.2% (23/52); B3 = 55.5% (40/72); B4 = 43.2% (51/118); (p < 0.10). In the lab, B3 presented higher (p ≤ 0.05) progressive motility (PM) than B4 after thawing (control group) and after all sperm challenges (TCG, CCG, and CTCG). However, despite B3 and B4 having demonstrated a similar percentage of plasma membrane integrity (PMI) to the control group (B3 = 66.7 ± 1.3 and B4 = 65.2 ± 3.3), B3 demonstrated higher (P ≤ 0.05) percentage of PMI (37.2 ± 2.5) than B4 (26.7 ± 3.3) after passing through the most stressing in vitro challenge (CTCG). The semen batch presenting the highest resistance to in vitro challenges was the one that presented a trend for higher in vivo fertility, suggesting that submitting semen samples to laboratory challenges may be an interesting alternative for selecting batches with greater field fertility.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Background: recombinant bovine somatotropin (rbST) is used in bovine embryo donors to improve superovulatory response and embryo quality. Objective: this study evaluated the effect of applying one versus two injections of 500 mg of rbST to donor Holstein heifers on estrus incidence (IE), diameter of the largest preovulatory follicle (dLPF), superovulation response (SR), embryo yield, and pregnancy rate in recipient Holstein cows (PRR). Methods: two superstimulation programs were conducted. Heifers were assigned to one of two treatments: 1) rbST-I, n = 5: heifers received one injection of rbST on day 0 (day of CIDR (controlled internal drug release) removal); 2) rbST-II, n = 5: heifers received the first rbST injection on day -8 and the second one on day 0. Thirty-eight cows were used as recipients and were assigned to receive one embryo from one of the two treatments. Results: there was no effect of treatment (p˃0.05) on PRR, dLPF, IE, and SR. The number of oocytes increased (p˂0.05) in the rbST-I treatment (1.3 ± 0.4 vs 0.2 ± 0.2), but there was no difference in the number (p˃0.05) of degenerated (1.0 ± 0.5 vs 4.5 ± 3.0) or transferable (1.0 ± 0.5 vs 1.4 ± 0.7) embryos between heifers in the rbST-I and rbST-II treatments, respectively. Moreover, no oocytes or embryos were recovered from 36.8% of donor heifers in either treatment. Conclusion: the application of 500 mg of rbST on days -8 and 0 of the follicular wave synchronization program did not increase the superovulatory response but significantly reduced the number of oocytes recovered from superovulated Holstein heifers.

ABSTRACT

This study was conducted to evaluate the influence of category (heifers, primiparous or multiparous cows) on pregnancy rates in a large scale resynchronization ovulation program. Nelore heifers (n = 903), primiparous lactating cows (n = 338) and multiparous lactating cows (n = 1,223) were synchronized using a conventional protocol of estradiol/P4-based fixed-time artificial insemination (FTAI). Thirty days after ultrasonography, females who failed the first FTAI were resynchronized with the same hormonal protocol prior to a second FTAI. The pregnancy status of each cohort was evaluated by ultrasonography 30 days after each FTAI. The average conception rate after the first FTAI and resynchronization was 80.5%. Heifers had a higher conception rate (85%) than primiparous (76%) or multiparous cows (78%; p = 0.0001). The conception rate after the first FTAI was similar among heifers (57%), primiparous cows (51%) and multiparous cows (56%; p = 0.193). After the second FTAI, heifers exhibited a higher conception rate (66%) than primiparous or multiparous cows (51%; p = 0.0001). These results demonstrate the feasibility of resynchronization in large beef herds for providing consistent pregnancy rates in a short period of time. We also demonstrated that ovulation resynchronization 30 days after FTAI is particularly effective for heifers, providing a conception rate of up to 66%.

ABSTRACT

Plasmatic progesterone concentrations were evaluated during the synchronization protocol with two doses of 22.5µg of Prostaglandin F2α, 10-day interval, and the conception rate of females in accordance to the reply to the protocol. Twenty-three female goats and two sexually mature Toggenburg bucks were used. Blood was sampled on day 0 (1st PGF2α injection), and on the following days 5, 10 (2nd PGF2α injection), 15, 20, and 33. The positive reply to the PGF2α was determined when the progesterone concentrations fell to values below 1.5ng/mL at days 5 and 15. The females were divided in three groups: Group I: females that responded to the two PGF2α applications; Group II: females that responded only to the second application; Group III: females that responded the first application, did not respond to the second application, were inseminated but did not conceive. The presence of a functional corpus luteum at the moment of the applications determined the reply to the protocol. There was no difference in the conception rates between females that responded to the two PGF2α applications or responded only to the second application.

ABSTRACT

The effect of the number of inseminations/cycles on the fertility of inseminated mares with diluted, cooled and stored jackass semen was studied. The cycles were controlled by rectal palpation and teasing, and mares were inseminated every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday (three times/week), from the detection of a 3.0 to 3.5cm follicle diameter in one of the ovaries until ovulation. The semen of five Pêga jackasses was diluted in skim milk-glucose or in egg yolk-glicine diluter and cooled at 5ºC for 12 hours, with the inseminate dose of 400 x 10(6) motile spermatozoa (at the moment of the final dilution, before cooling). The results of 195 cycles of 140 mares were grouped, in accordance with the number of artificial inseminations (AI)/cycle in: 1AI, 2AI and 3 or more AI. The conception rates for the first cycle were 50.0 percent, 62.1 percent and 41.0 percent, and after four cycles they were 47.7 percent, 55.6 percent and 42.9 percent, respectively for 1AI, 2AI and 3 or more AI (p>0.05). The number of AI/cycles, using cooled jackass semen, had no influence on fertility.

ABSTRACT

With the purpose of evaluating the productive life of Large White (LW) and Landrace (LR) sows and their reciprocal crosses, 2.444 records of prolificacy (TAN) and aggregated weight of the litter at birth (PAN) were analyzed. The sow records came from a commercial farm located in the State of Yaracuy, Venezuela. The data were adjusted by month, period of year, and farrowing number. For the final analysis, the years of birth of the sows were grouped into two periods: 1986- 1998 and 1999-2005. Sows with a chance of at least delivering three farrowings were considered. An analysis of variance (ANOVA) by the restricted maximum likelihood procedure was performed. The effects included in the analysis were: breed group of the sow (GRC: 1… 4), birth period of the sow (PN: 1, 2), month of birth of the sow (MN: 1 …12), the GRC*MN interaction, and the age at first farrowing as covariate. The adjusted and non-adjusted TAN averages obtained were 39.27 and 39.3, respectively; and the adjusted and nonadjusted PAN averages were 59.5 and 59.58 kg, in that order. The sows of LR*LW (42.69 piglets and 63.32 kg) and LW (41.44 piglets and 62.57 kg) breed group were higher (P<0.01) in TAN and PAN, respectively. There was a statistically significant effect of PN, PM, and GRC*MN. Heterosis was significant for TAN, with a value of 5.9%. It is concluded that purebred sows and their crosses whose genotype have alleles from mothers of the LW breed, are superior for the characteristics assessed in this research.

ABSTRACT

Bovine somatotropin (bST) injection was administered at the beginning of the ovulation induction with progesterone and eCG, and a second one during insemination to prove if it increased estrous response and conception rate (CR) in postpartum beef cows. A hundred and seventy four cows (Bos taurus-Bos indicus) of 60 to 100 days postpartum, with offspring and body condition of 2 to 2.5 were used. A progesterone-releasing intravaginal device (CIDR) was inserted to all females for 9 days and, while removing it, PGF2a was injected. Cows were randomly assigned to the following treatments: eCG (n = 44), received 400 IU of eCG at the moment CIDR was removed; bST (n = 44), received 500 mg of bST when CIDR was inserted and 500 mg of bST during insemination; bST-eCG (n = 44), received 500 mg of bST when CIDR was inserted and 400 IU of eCG while removing it; and 500 mg of bST during insemination; control (n = 42), only received the CIDR. Progesterone concentrations were assessed before the insertion of CIDR. IGF-I serum concentrations were determined in seven cows of each group. At the beginning of the experiment, 93% of the cows were in anoestrus. The rate of cows that showed estrus was similar (P > 0.05) between treatments [eCG (36.4%; bST (45.4%); eCG-bST (52.2%); control (40.4%)]. The CR was not different (P > 0.05) between treatments [eCG (31.2%); bST (15%); eCG-bST (34.7%); control (40%)]. Cows treated with bST had higher IGF-I concentrations than control cows. It is concluded that the injection of bST at the beginning of the ovulation induction with progesterone and eCG, and a second one during insemination does not improve estrous response or fertility in postpartum beef cows.

ABSTRACT

The present investigation was conducted to study the effect of intra uterine infusion of 20 ml Lugol’s iodine (0.25 %) on day 5 (Group I; n= 18), day 17 (Group II n= 17) on reproductive performance as compared to untreated animals (Group III; n= 18). The average inter estrus interval in the animals in treatment group I (14.12 ± 0.396 days) was significantly (P<0.01) shorter than group II (23.93 ± 0.330 days) and control group III (20.93 ± 0.870 days). The average duration (days) for first postpartum fertile estrus was shortest (88.93 ± 10.053 days) in group I, followed by group II (106.46 ± 8.743 days) and control group III (113.72 ± 7.131 days). The number of artificial insemination (A.I.) required per conception was observed to be only 1.38 in group I while the values were 1.50 and 1.91 for group II and III, respectively.

ABSTRACT

Pedigree and reproductive records of 151 Brown Swiss cows were analyzed with the objective of estimating the heritability (h²) and the repeatability (r) for different measures of fertility. Cows were daughters of 49 sires and 102 dams. The study was carried out at Las Margaritas research station located in Puebla, Mexico. The pedigree was the same for all traits; it consisted of 287 individuals, and included dams without records and sires. Genetic parameters were estimated for conception rate at first service (CR), days to first registered heat after calving (DH), days to first registered service after calving (DS), days open (DO), and calving interval (CI). Estimations were made independently for each trait with a repeatability animal model, which included the direct additive genetic effect, as well as the permanent environmental effect of the cow. Genetic parameters were estimated with restricted maximum likelihood. In general, estimates of permanent environmental variance were greater than estimates of additive genetic variance, so that r was mainly determined by permanent environmental effects. Estimates of h² and r were: 0.02 ± 0.06 and 0.16, 0.00 ± 0.05 and 0.15, 0.03 ± 0.03 and 0.03, 0.00 ± 0.03 and 0.14, and 0.03 ± 0.07 and 0.12 for DH, DS, CR, DO and CI. Artificial selection as a tool to induce genetic change in measures of fertility studied would be slightly effective because additive genetic variance is scarce.

ABSTRACT

The effects of different levels of finely ground corn (FC) supplementation to grazing beef cows after fixed-time AI (TAI) on serum progesterone (P4) concentrations on day 7 and conception rates on day 28 after TAI were investigated. Three hundred and sixty-four lactating multiparous Brangus cows had follicular and luteal activity synchronized by treatment with estradiol benzoate (Estrogin; 2.0mg IM) and insertion of intra-vaginal P4 releasing device (CIDR) on day -11, followed by treatment with PGF2α (Lutalyse; 25mg IM) on day -4, CIDR and calf removal on day -2, and treatment with GnRH (Fertagyl; 100µg IM) TAI and calf return on day 0. On day 0, cows were randomly allotted in one of the following FC supplement treatments: G1 - 2kg/day from day 0 to 21; G2 - 2kg/day from day 0 to 7, and 6kg/day from day 8 to 21; G3 -6kg/day from day 0 to 7, and 2kg/day from day 8 to 21; and G4 -6kg/day from day 0 to 21. Blood samples were collected on day 7, and pregnancy was determined by ultrasonography indicating the presence of a fetus on day 28. Cows supplemented with 2kg/d of FC had higher serum concentration of P4 on day 7 than cows supplemented with 6kg/d (1.58 vs. 1.28ng/mL; P<0.01; SEM = 0.08). Cows from G4 had higher conception rates compared to G1 cows (58.4 vs. 41.9 percent, respectively; P<0.05). The level of supplemental energy intake after TAI is negatively associated with following serum P4 concentrations, but positively associated with conception rates of grazing beef cows.

ABSTRACT

The conception rate, the prostaglandin response, the estrus duration, the reproductive class, and the mucous of goats inseminated with semen diluted in egg yolk extender and cooled at 5ºC, for 12 or 24 hours were evaluated. Sixty-two female goats and two sexually mature Toggenburg bucks were used. The females received two doses of 22.5µg of prostaglandine F2α, at 10-day intervals. After the first injection, the estrus was monitored three times a day (6:00, 12:00, and 18:00h), with a buck teaser. Only one insemination was used. The percentages of animals that showed estrus after the first and the second injection of PGF2α were 85.5 percent and 88.7 percent, respectively. The average intervals from first and second PGF2α injection to estrus were 41.04±20.32 and 45.67±9.28h, and the estrus durations for both injections were 40.02±15.96 and 32.24±12.09h, in this order. The interval from the PGF2α injection to the beginning of the estrus was longer (P<0.05), whereas the estrus duration was shorter (P<0.05) in the estrus induced after the second PGF2α injection. The total conception rate was 49.1 percent. Neither the semen storage length (12 or 24 hours) nor the reproductive class did not affect (P>0.05) the conception rate. The mucous observed at the insemination time influenced (P<0.05) the fertility of inseminated goats, with the striated aspect associated to higher fertility.
